Listed villa in southern Germany – “Only the best material for blow-in insulation”

A demanding insulation project with maximum precision and respect for historic building fabric.

The energy-efficient refurbishment of historic buildings is one of the most complex tasks in the construction sector. Especially when the exterior appearance must be fully preserved, innovative, non-invasive, and highly efficient insulation methods are required. In this project, a villa from the early 20th century in southern Germany was energetically modernized—without altering the listed façade. The solution: a premium blow-in insulation material with outstanding thermal performance, perfectly suited for extremely narrow cavities and the highest demands in quality and settlement stability.

 

Blow-in insulation as the ideal solution for listed façades

Buildings from this era often feature cavity wall constructions with very narrow gaps. This was also the case here: the cavity measured only around 3 cm in the lower sections and tapered towards the top to nearly 1 cm.

 

This made the building one of the most challenging cases, where conventional insulation methods reach their limits. Despite these difficult conditions, complete filling of the cavity was ensured. The insulation material was injected from the inside to comply with heritage protection requirements and to preserve the historic façade.

 

 

Insulation precisely applied—without intervention in the exterior envelope

A total of 5 m³ of insulation material was injected into the narrow cavities of the wall structure. Each injection process was carefully planned to ensure even the tightest areas were reached.

 

This clearly demonstrated how crucial the choice of the right blow-in insulation material is:

 

Only fine-grained, flow-stable, and highly compactable materials can reliably fill such narrow structures—without gaps and without subsequent settling. Using modern machinery and experienced specialists, a homogeneous insulation layer was created across the entire wall height. Even areas with gaps of just over 10 millimeters were significantly improved in thermal performance.

There is a multitude of systems and materials on the market for the energy-efficient retrofitting of double-leaf exterior walls. Processability is equally important: the material must be free-flowing enough to completely fill even narrow cavities and angled corners without leaving gaps.
