Blow-in insulation and BAFA grants – making the most of government subsidies
Blow-in insulation is one of the most effective measures for reducing energy loss in existing buildings. In addition to the energy efficiency improvements, owners can benefit from attractive subsidy schemes provided by the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA). These subsidies support both energy consultancy and the implementation of the insulation work itself – making the renovation particularly cost-effective.
Energy advice as the starting point for funding
Most funding schemes begin with an independent energy assessment.
This is carried out by certified energy efficiency experts and is subsidised by the BAFA funding scheme for energy advice for residential buildings.
As part of the assessment, an individual renovation roadmap (iSFP) is often drawn up. This is particularly recommended if several renovation measures are planned. This document details the building’s energy performance and provides clear recommendations on which steps are advisable and in what order. For owners, the iSFP is a practical tool for planning modernization measures – such as blow-in insulation – in a targeted and funding-eligible manner.
Funding limit for energy consultancy
50% of the costs of the energy consultancy are covered. The maximum funding limit is:
for detached and semi-detached houses
650 €
for buildings with three or more residential units
850 €
An additional grant may be awarded to owners’ associations if the energy consultant presents the renovation roadmap at a general meeting of owners.
BAFA grants for blow-in insulation of external walls
If blow-in insulation is carried out as a standalone measure, it is possible to apply for funding under the Federal Funding Scheme for Efficient Buildings – Standalone Measures (BEG EM). However, an individual renovation roadmap significantly improves the funding terms.

For measures relating to the building envelope, up to €60,000 per residential unit can be claimed as eligible costs – with iSFP. This means that even extensive insulation projects can be carried out cost-effectively.
