BioMMA - Intelligent synthesis and technical use of biogenic PMMA

EFRE_JTF_BioMMA_PMMA

Together with the DWI - Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials , we are working on the intelligent synthesis and technical use of biogenic acrylic glass (PMMA). The aim of the project is to produce new types of acrylic glass (PMMA) from bio-based monomers using processes suitable for industry. Biotechnologically optimized organisms are to produce biogenic MA/MMA on a technically relevant scale for the first time using fermentation processes in bioreactors. The aim is to show that bio-based PMMA has comparable properties to PMMA produced using conventional chemical processes.

A key benefit of this project is the reduction of dependence on petroleum-based materials. By using biogenic raw materials and fermentation technologies, we can produce PMMA from renewable sources, which not only reduces the environmental impact but also promotes the sustainability of our products. As part of our sustainability strategy, we are therefore working on the production of MMA from biological (non-fossil) sources - “BioMMA” - in addition to the use of recycled MMA and biopolymers. We use this BioMMA to produce a BioPMMA/BioPolymer, which is then foamed to test its suitability for use in our Capsute and Insute products.

This project is supported and funded by the ERDF/JTF program of the state of NRW.
